Why does everything print only in black & white?

If you have this issue, it's likely happening with any images or documents you print, not just ones from The Graphics Fairy.

A first guess is it's likely your print settings are set to black & white or monochrome instead of color.  This is easy to change.

Try this first:
When you print, search around in your application, to change the settings. What you will see will depend on the software and printer you have. Look for things like "color", "more settings" or "advanced settings".

For example,

  • In my Chrome browser, when I go to print, I can change the Color drop down from Black & White to Color.
  • When I'm printing directly from a folder on my computer, I need to click "more settings", scroll down to Color Mode and choose Color not Monochrome.
  • If I'm in Photoshop printing, in my print box, I go to Page Setup or Change Settings. I then go to Advanced settings and I can choose Color or Mono for my Brother printer.

If the above doesn't work:

If changing your printer settings from monochrome / black to color, doesn't help, it is probably the printer itself needs to be reset, or there is something with your printer drivers (update needed or reinstall).  These issues usually come up if updates are missed, technology is older, an operating system gets an update and no longer "plays nice" with your printer.

  • "UNPLUG PRINTER TO RESET" - Turn off & unplug the printer completely, plug back in & try again.
  • "INVESTIGATE PRINTER DRIVERS" - If unplugging doesn't work, it's most likely a larger issue with your printer drivers. I've seen this issue get to this point only once before. A quick google search brought up that people were having issues with a specific printer doing only black & white prints after a Windows update (it was an HP 3830). The advice was to reinstall the printer drivers. If it persisted, the advice was to change from HP printer drivers to Microsoft printer drivers directly in Windows. YouTube usually has good videos for reinstalling printer drivers if it reaches that point & you're unsure how to update.  [[[  Here were ones I found for a known issues with the HP 3830 and Windows:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FC2Ovp1eIfk Changing printer driver from HP to Windows (last resort):  https://youtu.be/SZwzOZzGwHc ]]]
